Dr Meenal Sohani

Dr Meenal is an MD Homoeopath and has been Practicing Homoeopathy since 1994, more than 25 years. She has completed Post graduate Diploma in Psychotherapy and Counselling and provides guidance and counselling in various areas of emotional health, relationships, self-development, skill enhancement like sports. She is also a Hypnotherapist and has completed her specialisation in Regression therapy “ TASSO” through Tasso Institute, Netherlands, which is certified by European Association of Regression Therapists.

She has developed her unique way of Practising where she skilfully understands how mental, emotional attitudes of her clients are seen at the Body level through the diseases. She makes her clients aware of this holistic concepts of Health, Disease, mind and body connection. The healing doesn’t involve just curing the disease but understanding the attitude that create the disease in the first place and makes the client empowered to change the attitudes in a positive way to make a deep positive impact and change in client’s life.

She firmly believes that diseases are not just malfunctions of body, but body makes us aware (through diseases) about what we need to change in our attitude. If we create awareness about our attitudes and beliefs, and change them, body starts changing with it, as mind and body are not separate entities and are reflections of each other.

She creates this awareness through counselling and hypnotherapy. In cases where repetitive harmful patterns of behaviour are seen in the client, she also helps the client to break those patterns through hypnotherapy and regression. Childhood traumas, relationship issues and some health issues where conventional medicine has nothing to offer can also be healed through regression. She also has in depth knowledge of body’s energetic chakras and helps client heal and balance the chakra disturbances through various methods like affirmations, meditations and chanting. She regularly takes sessions and workshops on various topics related to stress management, emotional health, parenting, relationships, chakra cleansing etc. She also teaches Post graduate Homoeopathy students through case presentations.

Every DISEASE has a MIND of its own!

Sudhir had a headache since morning and severe acidity… ‘Is it because of your fight with Arnav (their teenager) last night?’ his wife asked… he felt exactly the same; but he had to go to office. He had some Important meetings lined up and he had no time to think and ponder over his emotions. So, he just drank some antacid and popped a pain killer and went off to his work….

Sounds very familiar?

In day-to-day life, with so much happening around us, we hardly have time to stop and think about what’s happening inside of us. So, we resort to quick fixes for everything, and also our health problems…. Good or bad- who knows… it solves the problem FOR NOW

This is the only place we apply the ‘being in the now’ theory!!! 😊

But eventually the antacid doses increase and the pain killer becomes more frequent and the health problems multiply…

Do we ever stop and think what the body is trying to tell us through the pain or acidity?

‘Body tries to tell us something? No kidding…!!’  My patients often exclaim when I tell them about the mind-body connection for the first time.

Through years of practice and clinical observations, I have seen that the disease at the physical level is not a random occurrence. Any disease first starts at the abstract level in the mind.

But we rarely pay so much attention to how we feel emotionally. And then our body helps the mind. Body being more concrete, more solid, can actually display what the mind wants to express at the physical, cellular level.

Just like Sudhir, who had lot of anger from the fight that happened the previous night. He did not acknowledge the anger at mind level; so body displayed heat, burning, blood rushing to head… in short everything, that happens in anger; To make Sudhir aware of what he needs to resolve.

But our typical reaction is to only to give attention to symptoms like headache or burning and we take pain killer for that and not pay attention to anger at all. We keep doing that over and over again and over a period of months or years we develop high blood pressure. Now we start medicines to get down the blood pressure. But we still don’t ‘listen’ to what the body is trying to convey.

Every disease has a story behind it, an attitude that needs to be understood, an emotion that needs acknowledgement and expression. Every disease has a mind of its own.

If we understand the dis-ease that happens at the level of mind and address it consciously and through medicines, then we can actually Heal ourselves, and not just cure the symptoms.

When we treat mind and body together, like how we do in Homoeopathy, our overall health improves. But when we treat only symptoms, body makes the disease (the message it’s trying to convey) more intense to wake you up.

I am giving you a table below- here are few symptoms and their corresponding mind-equivalents that I have observed through clinical practice over the years.

Symptom at the physical levelAttitude /emotion t mind level
Vertigo – losing balanceInsecurity, instability in life- not sure of money/ health/ people around you
Cervical spondylitisTaking excessive responsibility on your shoulders, inability to say ‘no’, submissive attitude
Back painLack of strong Backing /support from near and dear ones
Knee painStuck feeling, inability to move forward in some important area of life
Acidity and burning in stomachSwallowing anger, bottled up frustration
Blood pressure/ headache /migraineChronic anger and worry
Dry skinLack of affection from loved ones (even as a child )
Eczema in obviously seen areasSelf-consciousness/ embarrassed feeling
Auto immune diseasesGuilt and self-reproach
Digestion issues/ diabetesHelpless, unfortunate feeling- life has been unfair feeling

Check for yourself and you will see that your body in fact is trying to talk to you, the question is ‘Are you listening?’

Part 2: A Classic Case of Mind Body Connect.

Anand, a middle-aged client of mine, was suffering from severe neck and back issues. He suffered from cervical spondylitis for years. He was advised surgery but he couldn’t do it, as he didn’t have enough finances; Or enough family support.

He was taking physiotherapy, allopathic pain killers but they were all helping him to a limited extent. He still had lot of back pain, stiff muscles and limited range of movements. He was advised rest but he was unable to, as he had exhausted all the leaves from office.

He actually came to me to seek counselling for stress management. I could see that he is under tremendous family pressures.

He was the only earning member in the family. His brother didn’t complete his education neither did any job for long. His brother didn’t contribute to any of the family responsibilities even for his own family, or his parents. Anand looked after his ailing parents, his own family and his brother’s family too. He was the go-to person for everyone in the family, even his nephew and niece.

Anand’s counselling helped him realize how much frustration he had inside him which he wasn’t even aware. Anand told me how much responsibility he is taking on his ‘shoulders;’ he said ‘No-one has my back;’ while speaking to him I gently made him aware about the mind body connection- his shoulders and neck were bearing the weight of responsibilities and his back felt unprotected and vulnerable. He also said that the rest that he was getting due to his problems, is the only rest he could claim.

He actually realized that his body was not only helping him to understand his perception of his life but also helping him to prioritize himself and claim some rest and relief which he never asked for.

We started with lot of attitude corrections and of course homoeopathic medicines to cover his physical problems as well as his personality and attitude. We slowly weaned him off, from his allopathic pain killers. We gave him yoga poses to release the muscle tension and develop a better assertive posture.

Isn’t it interesting that when we take excess responsibility mentally, our body feels a physical burden and our posture changes accordingly. So we need correction at every level – body, attitude, posture … holistically.

The most important change that came was, not just in his physical symptoms, but his attitude improved.

Over a period of few months, Anand learnt how to deal issues in a firm assertive way. Through counselling we discussed the best ways to delegate family responsibilities and make other people realize their contribution towards family. Anand didn’t need a disease to help him claim his rightful rest time now.

With every disease I always realize how our body contributes in making us aware of our attitudes and perceptions about our life. So diseases are not something we need to hate or get rid of; Diseases are messages from the body to correct attitudes, correct our lives…

Our body is always talking to us. The question is “Are we listening?”
